Wrestling games have been around since most of us can remember. I remember going to my old Family Video store in my hometown and seeing WWE on the shelf back in the early 1990’s. But this is the first game I have seen of this decade and it’s called WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010.
This iPhone game just came into the iPhone app store within the last few days and has garnered a solid 3/5 stars from a very harsh wrestling fan group (anyone that watches wrestling is a pretty tough cookie). THQ, which is a major game publisher has put this out in the App Store and created a pretty decent game in the mean time.
The biggest downfall of the WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 game for iPhone or iPod Touch is the lack of characters, I know for a fact that there is more than 11 “real-life wrestlers” between the professional wrestling circuit and am pretty disappointed THQ couldn’t come to an agreement with more of them to be included in this game, most likely a cost cutting measure, but disappointing none-the-less.
The cool thing in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 iPod Touch game is that there are 6 arenas, along with one of the originals, if not THE original WrestleMania ring. This is surprisingly over half of the number of wrestlers, in areas… I think THQ really could have done better with this one.
The graphics are very so-so. The 3D does not deliver and the backgrounds are really pixelated, even for the iPhone. The controls are iffy, not allowing for to much customization, but being a touch screen really limits a lot of the aspects of button/combo mashing seen on traditional consoles. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 does have a great classic HUD display though, reminiscent of the old SEGA and Nintendo games that most are so fond of. Brett Hart, anyone?
